AWESOME LEGACY OF A GREAT AUSTRALIAN

THANKYOU GOUGH -

I learned about the death of former Prime Minister Gough Whitlam not long after reading The Australian Guardian's Lenore Taylor's  obituary on my IPhone(passed down from my daughter). It was 6a.m. At 98yrs the Great Gough was dead.WHITLAM OBITUARY

The Political is Personal every day.

My husband had used me as a walking frame out of the bathroom and gone back to bed with prescribed pain-killers. After a week of visits to the bulk-billing G.P. a Sunday dash to hospital casualty, an MRI on his hip and spine, and sick certificates for work we acknowledge GOUGH and his able Minister for Social Security BILL HAYDEN for their work on UNIVERSAL HEALTH CARE, MEDIBANK.

Before Medibank, the government provided tax concessions to encourage adoption of private health insurance. However, these arrangements were grossly inequitable, with high income earners paying less than low income earners for the same health insurance coverage.4
The introduction of the system was met with ferocious opposition from many in the medical profession, the General Practitioners’ Society, the Australian Medical Association and the private health funds.5 Opponents argued that the system constituted a socialist takeover, and that the freedom of Australian citizens was at stake.6  Some doctors opposed the reforms because of their concerns that the system would reduce their income.7

The oral contraceptive pill was one of the most important developments in women health care. It gave women an easy and affordable way of controlling their fertility.
During its first week in power, the Whitlam Government removed the Commonwealth sales tax that had been applied to the contraceptive pill, and made oral contraceptives available through the Pharmaceutical Benefits Scheme, in order to provide more affordable, equitable access.

Single Mothers could keep their babies! The Nuns still tried to take the new-born illegitimate babies off my sinful friends but they were saved by knowing they could apply for the single parent pension.
Appointment of the first Women's Advisor to the Prime Minister:
Elizabeth ReidNO FAULT DIVORCE was introduced putting an end to more grief , financial and emotional which any break-up of a relationship engenders. By many accounts women in particular were less hindered in making an application to divorce, although Private detectives bemoaned their business down-turn for evidence of adulterous partners.

As it the UK play/film 'Educating Rita' wives going to University turned their Western patriarchal world upside down: Institutions would become more democratic - Social Democratic.

THEN THERE'S THE ARTS OF THE PEOPLE: Public support for Australian artists

like my husband and I...immigrant 'poms' who grew up with Whitlam's legacy unfolding...including free University to enhance our lives and relieved of a cultural cringe...
